Landscape and Traditional Homes in Lesotho

Lesotho is known as the Mountain Kingdom or Kingdom in the Sky and is the highest country in the world. The landscape is dynamic and full of incredible features amongst the mountains. This small mountain serves as the inspiration for the iconic traditional Basotho hat, the Mokorotlo.

The Spiral Aloe is only found in the Maluti Mountains in Lesotho. No place else in the world has this incredible crop, which is used in some traditional Basotho ceremonies. The male spins clockwise and the female spins counter clockwise.

Outside of the capital city, Maseru, most people live rural lives centered around agriculture and herding. The traditional Basotho home is the round stone structure with a thatched roof pictured here.
